This includes both crop and animal production. The Agri-business programme identifies
business opportunities in the agriculture supply-production-marketing value chain and assists in building community based businesses. To date AfricaWorks Swaziland has developed a model market driven poultry value chain within the Partners Worldwide network apart from the
honey and vegetable value chains which are also underway. This poultry value chain links farmers with the input suppliers, the financier and the processor and the market. This was modelled through a private public partnership where a local finance institution provided loans to the farmers which were guaranteed by another partner with AfricaWorks playing a facilitatory role. This model was also developed with support from the Ministry of Agriculture in Swaziland and the National Marketing Board of Swaziland (Namboard) with technical support from Partners World Wide. AfricaWorks Swaziland is now working on the development of a smallholder marketing hub which will not only deal with chickens but encompass other value chain products. Strategic plans are also in the pipeline to develop the pork value chain and the fruits and tree nuts value chains specifically focusing on macadamia nuts.
